Angel Reach serves Kinship families and youth who have aged out of the foster care system and/or are at risk of homelessness between the ages of 16-24. Most come from the Greater Houston area. Some come from other areas in the state of Texas. These young people are scared and alone, with a history of being consistently let down by the adults who should have been caring for them. The effect on our community is tragic. The statistics speak for themselves: • 50% will end up homeless • 27% will end up in jail • 67% will end up pregnant before they turn 21, and many of their children will repeat the cycle • 46% (only) will complete high school The goal at Angel Reach is to provide a foundation for our young people and families through their respected programs to become emotionally stable and financially independent. From the meager beginnings of serving a few kinship/foster families and their children out of the founder's garage, Angel Reach has grown to now serve over 300 Kinship individuals and 135 young adults between the ages of 16-24 each year. The Transitional Living Program (TLP) is our largest Program and has expanded to 4 homes and scattered-site housing, usually apartments, as well as the support programs used to support each individual. TLP is a 4-year program where every day that a young person spends with us, they are offered an opportunity to learn, be cared for, and supported in their goals. Our mission is to break the generational cycle of abuse, neglect, and homelessness by equipping aged-out foster youth and homeless youth to live independently as well as providing critical services and support to relatives doing their best to keep children out of the foster care system. Our vision is to help these children and youth achieve their full potential in spite of the obstacles placed on them by broken families and a broken system.
The majority of individuals in a homeless shelter at any given time are women and their children. These women are typically victims of domestic violence and are fleeing an abusive home looking to start over in a safe environment. Many other women in shelters are single mothers who lost their jobs due to unforeseen circumstances and need help to get back on their feet. Regardless of the situation that led these women to homelessness, they need support - both physical and emotional - to transition to a better life for themselves and their children. BRAWS mission is to support these women by providing new (tags on, only) bras and underwear, as well as feminine hygiene supplies. Unbeknownst to many people, these are some of the most requested critical needs by women in shelters. New bras and underwear and tampons, pads, and pantyliners are rarely donated, expensive items for a shelter to replenish, and not covered by food stamps. Insufficient access to these items often leads to unsanitary conditions and health problems.
