Women’s History Month is a time to reflect on the impact women have made throughout history, and to honor their critical role in leading the way today. International Women’s Day (March 8) provides a powerful moment to celebrate the achievements of women across all sectors - including philanthropy and charitable fundraising.

Women have long been at the forefront of social change, using their vision, compassion, and leadership to uplift communities, break down barriers, and champion equality. 💪

💼 Madam C.J. Walker (1867–1919)

Monique Couvson
As president and CEO of Grantmakers for Girls of Color (G4GC), Couvson has directed over $26 million to 400 organizations supporting girls and gender-expansive youth of color. Her initiatives, such as the Black Girl Freedom Fund and the #1Billion4BlackGirls campaign, aim to address systemic inequities and uplift marginalized communities

🌏 Bo Thao-Urabe
A Hmong-American leader who founded the Coalition of Asian American Leaders (CAAL) and Building More Philanthropy with Purpose (BMPP) Giving Circle, focusing on mobilizing resources for Asian American communities and social justice.

In honor of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, we spotlight several extraordinary nonprofits founded and led by women, dedicated to addressing the needs of women and girls worldwide: 🌍

PERIOD. is a global youth fueled nonprofit which strives to eradicate period poverty and stigma through advocacy, education, and service. Powered by hundreds of youth led volunteer PERIOD. Chapters around the world, PERIOD. distributes period products to communities in need, authors menstrual health curriculum, and advocates for change.

👩‍💻 Girls Who Code
Founded by Reshma Saujani, Girls Who Code is on a mission to close the gender gap in technology by providing girls with education and mentorship in computer science. Their programs empower young women to pursue careers in STEM, challenging the stereotypes that limit their potential.

📢 She’s the First
Co-founded by Tammy Tibbetts and Christen Brandt, She’s the First is committed to ensuring that every girl has the opportunity to choose her own future. By supporting education and mentorship programs for girls in low-income communities worldwide, they are helping to break cycles of poverty and gender inequality.

🩺 Black Mamas Matter Alliance
Led by Black women, this organization advocates for Black maternal health, rights, and justice. Their work focuses on policy change, research, and community-driven solutions to address disparities in maternal healthcare and ensure that Black mothers receive equitable and respectful care.

🌏 Women for Women International
Since its founding by Zainab Salbi, Women for Women International has helped women survivors of war rebuild their lives through education, vocational training, and financial literacy programs. Their holistic approach supports women in achieving economic independence and reclaiming their power.

🤱 Chamber of Mothers
A movement launched by a group of Founding Mothers, the Chamber of Mothers is the only nonprofit dedicated to advocating for policies in a bipartisan approach that support mothers, including paid family leave, maternal health, and childcare solutions. With a national network of 35 chapters and growing, their work ensures that mothers’ voices are heard in policy decisions that impact families and communities across the U.S.

🏡 Miry’s List
Founded by Miry Whitehill, Miry’s List supports refugee families as they resettle in the U.S. by providing essential resources, community support, and empowerment programs. Their work uplifts women and and their families who are starting over in a new country.

🎉 Worthy of Love
Founded by Mary Davis, Worthy of Love creates unforgettable birthday celebrations for children experiencing homelessness, ensuring they feel valued and loved. Through joy-filled events, the organization uplifts and empowers children and families in need.
