June 1969 the Stonewall riots occurred; many look to this event as the start of the gay liberation movement. In 1970, the first gay pride marches took place in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Chicago, commemorating the anniversary of the riots. Now, supporters around the world can march in Pride Parades throughout the month of June and participate in activities during all of Pride Month!
Not only is June celebrated as Pride Month, but it is also a time to embrace nature as Great Outdoors Month. Did you know that in 1872 Ulysses S. Grant made Yellowstone the first national park? Today there are 59 National Parks in the United States, each unique with spectacular feats of nature. During Great Outdoors Month you can #EscapeTheIndoors and enjoy the natural beauty of this country.
June 3rd - Cancer Survivors Day
Do you have a cancer survivor in your life? Are you a cancer survivor yourself? Between 1990 and 2014 the cancer death rate in the United States dropped by 25%. Let’s increase the number of cancer survivors! Show your support by donating to the American Cancer Society.
June 5th - World Environment Day
This holiday was created by the UN in the 1970’s as a way to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues that affect our global community. This year the theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution” and the host country is India. Do your part on this day and everyday by reducing the plastic in your life. Use reusable water bottles, grocery bags and straws to cut down on daily plastic usage. You can also make your own beeswax reusable food wrap as a more sustainable replacement to plastic wrap. It’s a fun craft to do at home and can make a great ~double gift~ by using it as wrapping paper for a present.
